Q3 2026 Market Report / Columbus

Columbus data center filings, Q3 2026: 2,530 MW of gas plants for data centers await the state while towns vote to limit them.

Q3 2026 filings to build data center space and power in the ten counties around Columbus, and the votes around them, each linked to its public record. The 2,530 MW is the most the three pending plants could produce, before the state rules on them.

1

site filed to add data center capacity: a gas plant of up to about 430 MW for EdgeConneX's New Albany North site, applied for with the state on 24 July.

2,530

megawatts, at most, of gas plants for data centers awaiting a state decision at the quarter's end: two for EdgeConneX, at New Albany and Ashville, and the Fairfield Energy Center at Millersport.

12

local bodies voted on data centers, seven to limit them: two moratoria, a district ban in Dublin, and four bans or public-vote rules sent to voters.

The quarter's one new filing was a gas plant for EdgeConneX in New Albany, one of three data center plants waiting on the state, while Pataskala turned Aligned Data Centers down and seven of twelve local votes set limits.

Map of the Columbus area, Ohio. The quarter's one counted filing, a gas plant of up to about 430 MW for EdgeConneX's New Albany North site on Clover Valley Road, is the dark mark east of New Albany. An orange mark at Pataskala is the state air permit issued in August for Aligned's 129 generators, on a site the city council turned down. Pause markers show Plain City's new moratorium and Prairie Township's extended one. Earlier filings are shown lighter: the Magellan campus on Rathmell Road south of Columbus, Amazon's fuel cells in Hilliard and two Jerome Township campuses on Industrial Parkway. Operating data centers from PeeringDB are small hollow dots.

The small hollow grey dots are data centers operating today, from the public PeeringDB facility list, each linked to its PeeringDB record. An operating building is context for the filings and is in no count on this page.

What happened this quarter

The one new filing is a power plant

One site filed to add data center capacity this quarter, and the filing was for power rather than a building. On 24 July PowerConneX, an EdgeConneX affiliate, applied to the Ohio Power Siting Board for a gas plant on EdgeConneX's New Albany North site on Clover Valley Road, which EdgeConneX describes as up to about 430 MW and the primary source of electricity for the data centers there. The board found the application complete on 4 September and set hearings for 22 October and 4 November. The power would come from on-site gas engines: Ohio EPA's draft air permit of 6 August, for "a data center and power generation facility" at the site, covers 30 of them. No new data center building was filed in the covered records, but those records leave out building permits in Licking and Union counties, where most of the market's campuses sit, because they cannot be searched online.

Pataskala said no to Aligned, and Ohio permitted the generators Aligned had already applied for

Pataskala's council voted 7-0 on 25 August to disapprove Aligned Data Centers' plan for three data center buildings on 89.41 acres at Broad and Mink streets. The generators are part of the same project, not a fallback from it. Aligned applied to Ohio EPA on 29 July, before the vote, for 129 emergency generators at 6770 Mink Street, and the state issued the permit six days after the vote. An air permit settles air quality, not local land use, so it does not revive the plan the council turned down. Pataskala's voters decide on 3 November whether to write a ban on data centers drawing more than 25 MW into the city charter. Aligned's case is not in the count because its records do not show when it was filed.

Columbus and the state turn to the cost of power

Columbus's council voted 9-0 on 28 September to have its water and power department propose peak rates for large users, data centers named among them, by 26 October. On 5 August the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio ruled that a data center returning to AEP Ohio's standard service must give 180 days' notice and bear the cost of buying its power. Two gas plants filed earlier in the year, PowerConneX's plant of up to 800 MW at Ashville for EdgeConneX and the 1,300 MW Fairfield Energy Center at Millersport, went through hearings with no decision by the quarter's end. With New Albany North, that is up to 2,530 MW of gas plants for data centers waiting on the board.

A site counts once in a quarter however many permits it files. The count draws on City of Columbus permits and site plans, Jerome Township zoning certificates, planning cases that give a filing date, and the state's power plant applications, searched the same way for every quarter. Building permits in Licking and Union counties and Hilliard are not in it.

What to watch

  • By 26 October 2026: Columbus Water and Power owes council its proposed peak rates for large users, under Ordinance 2560-2026.
  • 3 November 2026: voters in Pataskala and Sunbury decide charter bans on data centers over 25 MW, and Grove City voters decide whether large projects need a public vote (minutes).
  • 4 November 2026: the siting board's evidentiary hearing on the New Albany North plant opens, after a local hearing on 22 October (docket).

Ohio EPA permits for the generators and power plants of new data centers. 3 fall in Q3 2026. They are listed, not counted, because the records show when a permit was drafted or issued, not when it was applied for. A generator rating is backup plant, not capacity a customer can use.

Press reports, planning cases with no filing date and records outside the counting rule. None of these is in the counts above.

  • Harvey Farms, Etna Township. A 397.3-acre rezoning for "a 397.3-acre data center facility", tabled twice by county planners (staff report). Its filing date is not in the records.
  • Aligned Data Centers, Pataskala. Three data center buildings on 89.41 acres, disapproved on 25 August (staff report). Filed in 2025 on a date not shown.
  • Project Cosmos, Marysville. A data center exterior plan approved on 15 January 2025 (minutes). No filing date on record.
  • Fairfield Energy Center, Millersport. A 1,300 MW gas plant for "a data center adjacent to the project site" (docket). No record names the data center.
  • Neo Power, Jersey Township. A 500 MW gas plant applied for in June (docket). No record names a data center.
  • Hartman Farms line, Hamilton Township, near Lockbourne. Power lines for a customer of up to 688 MW on Magellan LLC land (construction notice). The record does not say data center.
  • Stream Data Centers, Grove City and Jackson Township. About 300 acres reported in the press. No local record names it.

What is counted. Only work that adds data center buildings or capacity: new buildings and planning cases naming a data center, and power plants over 1 MW whose records name the data center they serve. Replacements, repairs, renewals and amendments do not count, nor do planning cases whose records give no filing date.

Counting. A site is one address or one campus and counts once in a quarter however many filings it makes. Meta's three power plants for its Sidecat campus are one site, and so are the Thomas and Starkey complexes in Jerome Township, which share an owner and a boundary. A power plant case is dated by its application, not the notice that opens its docket.
