Why Springfield is a market at all
Springfield is not a small version of Kansas City. In the public interconnection record, it is a one-building colocation market with a very specific reason to exist: Bluebird Underground combines a hardened limestone envelope, a regional fiber operator and Southwest Missouri's local internet exchange in one facility. For a buyer who values geographic separation and operational resilience more than a long landlord list, that can be the whole answer.
The inverse matters just as much. The public record offers no second connected building for meaningful in-market competition, and a six-network PeeringDB roster is not Chicago or Dallas. Springfield works when the facility fits. If it does not, buyers should expect to evaluate a different market for another combination of power, cooling and interconnection.
Springfield Underground and Bluebird Underground are not the same thing
The underground complex
Springfield Underground, an Erlen Group company, publishes 3.2 million square feet of leasable space, more than three miles of lit roadway and a constant 62-degree ambient temperature. Most of that is warehouse, logistics and industrial space, not data hall.
The data center
Bluebird is the data-center operator and a lessee at Building 25. Its facility is reported at 80,000 gross square feet, with more than 29,000 square feet of white space after a 2020 expansion.
The capacity you can buy
No public source gives a current, facility-specific block of contractible IT power. White space, utility service and backup generation answer three different questions. A real quote still has to join them.
The 3.2-million-square-foot figure belongs to the whole Springfield Underground property. It is not the size of Bluebird's data center. The defensible facility figures are 80,000 gross square feet and more than 29,000 square feet of white space, on different measurement bases.

Six megawatts is a resilience figure, not a capacity offer
Bluebird's most repeated number is 6 MW. The underlying equipment is three 2 MW diesel generators. That tells you how much nameplate backup generation is installed. It does not disclose the building's critical IT load, the utility service available to a new tenant, the reserve carried under N+1 operation or the power deliverable at a particular rack density.
The same discipline applies to area. The 2020 expansion put total white space above 29,000 square feet, but Bluebird does not publish a current Springfield-only vacancy schedule. Its current data-center page mentions 8,000 to 10,000 square feet of available white space while discussing both Springfield and Quad Cities, so assigning that figure to this building would be a guess.
Bluebird Underground is operating, interconnected and equipped with 6 MW of on-site backup generation. Public sources do not establish how many critical megawatts are available for a new deployment today.
Who is actually plugged in across Springfield, Missouri
A building existing and a building being connected are different facts, and only one of them decides whether your traffic can get where it needs to go cheaply. From PeeringDB, which is maintained by the network operators present in these buildings rather than by the landlords, which is what makes it worth more than a directory. Two limits. Entries are voluntary, so a building showing no networks may be single tenant or may simply never have registered. And a network being present says nothing about whether the building has space, power or a price for you: that is still a call.
The network is small, but it is not an afterthought
Bluebird owns the regional backbone that serves the building, and SpringIX operates inside it. That is materially different from an isolated disaster-recovery bunker. Bluebird advertises 1, 10, 100 and 400 Gbps ports and operator-stated latency of 5 to 8 milliseconds to Kansas City, 8 to 10 to St. Louis and 10 to 12 to Chicago.
It is still a concentrated ecosystem. PeeringDB currently shows six network presences, one exchange and two entries in its carrier field. Those are useful public signals, not a complete service catalogue. Ask for the current carrier list, physical entrance paths, splice points and cross-connect pricing rather than assuming that two names in a directory means two fully independent routes.
What the underground envelope changes, and what it does not
Surface-weather exposure
Eighty-five feet of limestone separates critical systems from tornado debris, hail, direct sun and ordinary surface temperature swings. That is a real physical advantage, not a branding metaphor.
Thermal stability
The surrounding complex stays near 62 degrees, while Bluebird describes a controlled 64-to-68-degree data-center environment. Stable intake conditions reduce the cooling problem; they do not eliminate it.
Water and cooling
Bluebird describes closed-loop chilled-water cooling. Closed loop does not mean zero water use, and no public PUE, WUE or annual consumption figure is available.
Underground operations
Generator exhaust, fire load, grounding in limestone, equipment movement and emergency egress all need engineered answers. The facility's own history shows those systems were design problems, not assumptions.
When Springfield is right, and when it is the wrong choice
Good fit
Regional enterprise infrastructure, disaster recovery separated from a coastal or major-metro primary, public-sector and healthcare workloads, private suites, and buyers who value a stable physical envelope with an on-site exchange.
Compare another market
Deployments that require dozens of carriers, multiple competing landlords, a publicly documented multi-megawatt power block, or high-density liquid cooling on a fixed delivery date. Springfield may still work, but the public record does not prove those requirements.
What to verify before treating this as a shortlist
- Available critical power: the deliverable kW by room, circuit and redundancy mode, not the generator nameplate.
- Rack density and cooling: supported air-cooled density, containment design, liquid-cooling options and the capacity of the active chilled-water loop.
- Electrical diversity: where the three utility feeds separate, which substations serve them and which components remain common.
- Generator runtime: tested load, N+1 reserve, fuel burn, replenishment contract and the operating plan during a regional emergency.
- Fiber diversity: current carriers, physical entrances, shared conduit, meet-me-room design, SpringIX access and cross-connect fees.
- Underground response: fire detection and suppression, exhaust, water intrusion controls, egress, loading clearances and emergency-service access.
- Commercial inventory: the exact suite or cage, expansion rights, metered-power terms, remote-hands response and every recurring fee.
Make Bluebird translate every attractive building-level number into your deployment. Six megawatts becomes available critical kW at your redundancy. Three feeds become three traced utility paths. Twenty-nine thousand square feet becomes the room and expansion option in your order. SpringIX becomes the ports, cross-connects and routes your network design can actually use. The cave is the differentiator; the schedule is what you buy.
